Loving Others and Having a Pure Heart
Brotherhood, goodwill, and a heart free of rancor and envy
Qur'an
And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful."

And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.

Hadith
Narrated Abu Burda:
That his father said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) sent Mu`adh and Abu Musa to Yemen telling them. 'Treat the people with ease and don't be hard on them; give them glad tidings and don't fill them with aversion; and love each other, and don't differ."
Abu Huraira reported it as a marfu' hadith (and the words are):
The deeds are presented on every Thursday and Monday and Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, grants pardon to every person who does not associate anything with Allah except the person in whose (heart) there is rancour against his brother. It would be said: Put both of them off until they are reconciled.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales; and do not look for the others' faults and do not spy, and do not be jealous of one another, and do not desert (cut your relation with) one another, and do not hate one another; and O Allah's worshipers! Be brothers (as Allah has ordered you!)"
Abu Huraira reported:
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Beware of envy, for it devours good deeds just as fire devours wood or grass.”
Abu Huraira reported:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Be servants of Allah as brothers. Do not be hostile to each other and do not hate each other. Follow the right course, seek nearness to Allah in worship, and give glad tidings.”
Jabir narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:
"Indeed Ash-Shaitan has despaired of getting those who perform Salat to worship him. But he is engaged in sowing hatred among them."
Rather, he strives to incite discord between them with conflicts, hostility, wars, tribulations, and so on.
Anas ibn Malik reported:
We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, “A man from the people of Paradise is coming to you.” A man from the Ansar came, his beard disheveled by the water of ablution, and he was carrying both of his shoes with his left hand. The next day, the Prophet repeated the same words, and the man came in the same condition. On the third day, the Prophet repeated the same words again, and the man came in the same condition again. When the Prophet stood up to leave, Abdullah ibn Amr followed the man and said to him, “I am in an argument with my father, and I have sworn not to enter my home for three days. May I stay with you?” The man said yes. Abdullah stayed three nights with the man, but he never saw him praying at night. Whenever he went to bed, the man would remember Allah and rest until he woke up for morning prayer. Abdullah said that he had never heard anything but good words coming from his mouth. When three nights had passed, and he did not see anything special about his actions, Abdullah asked him, “O servant of Allah, I have not been in an argument with my father, nor have I cut off relations with him. I heard the Prophet say three times that a man from the people of Paradise was coming to us, and then you came. I thought I would stay with you to see what you are doing that I could follow, but I did not see you do many good deeds. Why did the Prophet convey this about you?” The man said, “There is nothing else but what you see here, except that I find no malevolence within myself towards the Muslims, nor do I envy anyone for the good that Allah has given them.” Abdullah said, “This is what was conveyed about you, but it is something we have been unable to do.”
Allah Almighty has condemned people who envy others for what Allah has given them from His favor.
Abu Tha’labah reported:
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “On the middle night of Sha’ban, Allah looks down upon His creation and He forgives the believers, gives respite to the unbelievers, and He abandons the people of malice to their malice until they give it up.”
Malice is the root of evil. Whoever harbors evil in his heart will have a bitter plant grow, the taste of which is anger and the fruit of which is regret.
Ibn Umar reported:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Forgive each other and drop the grudges between yourselves.”
Grudges are malice, enmity, and hatred. Indeed, they are among the greatest of sins, so let them fall away from your hearts and purify your hearts from them.
Abu Huraira reported:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Give each other gifts, for gifts remove agitation within the chest.”
Disturbance in the chest, that is, its malevolence and whispers. It is said to be malice and anger, or severe anger, or enmity.
Ibn `Abbas said:
“The Prophet (ﷺ) used to supplicate, saying: “My Lord, aid me and do not aid against me, and grant me victory and do not grant victory over me, plot for me and do not plot against me, guide me and facilitate guidance for me, grant me victory over those who transgress against me. My Lord, make me ever-grateful to You, ever-remembering of You, ever-fearful of You, ever-obedient to You, ever-humble to You, oft-turning and returning to You. My Lord, accept my repentance, wash my sin, answer my call, make firm my proof, make firm my tongue, guide my heart, and remove the treachery of my chest.”
Resentment in the chest, that is, its malevolence, bitterness, malice, envy, and such evil character traits that arise from the chest and settle in the heart. It is said that resentment, rancor, and malice are derived from the word for “besmut,” meaning blackness, as in the soot of a cooking pot. It is said resentment and rancor are attributed to the chest because they originate in the faculty of anger that lies in the heart, which itself lies in the chest. To “remove” it means to extract it and cleanse it from the chest.
Al-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwam reported:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Lurking towards you are the diseases of the nations before you. Envy and hatred are the razor. I do not say they shave hair, but rather they shave the religion. By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you have faith, and you will not have faith until you love each other. Shall I tell you what can establish that for you? Spread peace between yourselves.”
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection . "
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
Don't nurse grudge and don't bid him out for raising the price and don't nurse aversion or enmity and don't enter into a transaction when the others have entered into that transaction and be as fellow-brothers and servants of Allah. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor humiliates him nor looks down upon him. The piety is here, (and while saying so) he pointed towards his chest thrice. It is a serious evil for a Muslim that he should look down upon his brother Muslim. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for his brother in faith: his blood, his wealth and his honour.
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: 'O my son! If you are capable of (waking up in) the morning and (ending) the evening, while there is nothing of deception in your heart for anything, then do so.' Then he said to me: 'O my son! That is from my Sunnah. Whoever revives my Sunnah then he has loved me. And whoever loved me, he shall be with me in Paradise.'"
The tradition mentioned above (No. 3593) has also been transmitted by Sulayman ibn Musa through a different chain of narrators.
This version has:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The testimony of a deceitful man or woman, of an adulterer and adulteress, and of one who harbours rancour against his brother is not allowable.
His saying “one with spite” means with malice and grudges.
Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah reported:
When the verse was revealed, “Hold to forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant,” (7:199), the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “O Gabriel, what is this?” Gabriel said, “I do not know until I ask the All-Knowing.” Then Gabriel said, “O Muhammad, Allah commands you to keep relations with those who cut you off, to give to those who deprive you, and to forgive those who wrong you.”
It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr said:
“It was said to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): ‘Which of the people is best?’ He said: ‘Everyone who is pure of heart and sincere in speech.’ They said: ‘Sincere in speech, we know what this is, but what is pure of heart?’ He said: ‘It is (the heart) that is pious and pure, with no sin, injustice, rancor or envy in it.’”
A pure heart is free from idolatry, rancor, malice, envy, miserliness, arrogance, love of this world, and love of leadership. It is thus free from every affliction that distances one from Allah, free from every doubt that contradicts His message, free from every desire that opposes His command, free from every want that competes with His will, and free from everything that could cut one off from Allah. This is the pure heart in a paradise preceding in the world, in a paradise between worlds, and in Paradise on the Day of Resurrection.
Abu Huraira reported:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, the diseases of nations will afflict my nation.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, what are the diseases of nations?” The Prophet said, “Insolence, hubris, turning their backs to one another, competing for worldly possessions, hating each other, and miserliness, until there will be oppression and then there will be bloodshed.”
That is, hostility, enmity, malice, hatred, and envy for each other, which is to hope others are deprived of blessings.

Abu Darda reported:
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever defends the reputation of his brother, Allah will defend his face from the Hellfire on the Day of Resurrection.”
